The fast pace of change that is driving social, political and business context in today’s India has already created an unprecedented variety of psychological impact on individuals. This impact coupled with relentless globalization of economy, over last few years has lead to a progressive disintegration between employee(s) and organization(s) as against a backdrop of long tenured and sustained symbiotic relationship that was the hallmark of Indian industries across the country. With frequent reorganizing, rightsizing, delayering, teaming, flattening the pyramid, outsourcing and M&A’s taking place more regularly on one hand, and steady increase in Gen Y Population with easy access to information on the other have significantly impacted careers and career development processes in organizations. Career has assumed a new meaning among the Gen Y population in India in recent years. The expectations of these Gen Y careerists from organizations have changed significantly and thus ways to engage them have also changed significantly. This has created a big challenge to HR professionals in terms of designing and delivering new tools and processes that are required for successful deployment of organizational career Management System.

The more challenging, complex and contrasting are becoming the needs of Gen Y professionals from organizations, more pressure are being build in the internal organizational system to enable leaders and HR professionals to think out of box, to change the traditional rule of engagement that are based on external perspective and build innovative career management system that has roots more on internal career perspective.

Under this backdrop, there is a fundamental need to design innovative organizational career management system comprising innovative practices that are aligned with organizational values and integrate them with other HR practices, to fulfill the diverse internal career needs of Gen Y employees in organizations. Both Line and HR Managers need to play an important role in ensuring that career management practices are designed to cater to pluralistic career orientations of Gen Y professionals by taking into account both their personal and professional growth.  They should build such effective career management practices that enables an individual to fulfill his/her career aspirations in the context of achieving the organization goals and in turn impacts his/her organizational commitment and finally the decision to stay or quit the organization.
