It’s time for Emotionally Intelligent people

As a child, most of us were asked about our ranks in the annual exams and which for some reason justified our overall performance in the class. Isn’t!!

And if I can fairly recollect, nobody ever asked in a Parents’ Teachers’ meet about how their wards performed emotionally and even if ever that term would have used mostly was referred to the crying babies entering a new school. But is it not more than that? Dealing with classmates of different background, nature, temper…Is it not a big deal? How about coping with new schools, new teachers and above all some school bullies?

Well this all was important, just that the importance was not very clear. But now as the same set of generation moved in workplace which is high stressed environment with touch of instability most of the times , things becomes more clear now and so does the requirement for Emotional Intelligence.

Emotional Quotient plays an important role even more than your Intelligence Quotient. We need everyone to be a people manager irrespective of the role he/she pursues. Every single day as one gets more involved in the system it’s the EQ which helps one adapt to the changing environment.

Sadly enough schools today prepare us to sharpen our mental aptitude and that’s what matters for almost all around. But that’s not all that matters!! Here are few out of many reasons why our EQ should be talk of the town now…

Increases Self Awareness and hence helps the person understand his/her own behavior. This in turn enhances the confidence level to a great extent adding dynamism and self innovation to ones personality type. Someone who is aware about his own strengths and emotions will be better able to channelize the same for overall benefit.

Self Motivation is the key to hold oneself during tough times. Someone who can go back and start from scratch again with the same zeal and enthusiasm is no way can be let down in adverse circumstances. Look around and see when there are days we feel so close to giving up, but then it’s the inner strength which gives enough momentum to go back and just do it!! That’s the power of our Emotional side.

Change is inevitable but the acceptance of the same is the game changer here. Most love to cling to the past glory but one who moves ahead with time is for sure going to create a history. It’s easier to say than done but that’s why these people are referred Emotionally Intelligence.

Helps establish a connect and makes one more social. Not just you can communicate effectively but also positively influence, motivate and work together in teams which can lead to give better results. It for sure is must for a leader who essentially is working towards collaborative results.

It’s time for even organizations to look beyond the certifications & awards and onboard people who can contribute towards a culture, were emotions are valued not just measured.

I agree with you 100% Rakshita. EQ plays a very important in organisations. Therefore u keep telling all thr CEO ‘s I work with… build the culture with high EQ people. Although I agree it is equally tough to manage such people. Good stuff… super like. .. !!!

Great piece Rakshita – you’re absolutely right that these skills are more important than ever. The rise of practices in mindful behaviour is a positive step, and it’s coming to schools too – but is it moving fast enough.
